Racing & Wagering Western Australia and Perth Racing has this morning made the decision to cancel the Ascot race meeting scheduled for Wednesday, 10 February 2016 due to the forecast of extreme temperatures.

The Bureau of Meteorology is currently forecasting the temperature at Ascot on Wednesday to reach 41° by 11am, peak at 43° during the afternoon and remain at 40° at
5pm. RWWA Manager Thoroughbred Racing David Hunter said “the welfare of our horses and industry participants is absolutely paramount and we will not race during such extreme conditions. We did look at scenarios for an earlier or later start to the meeting, however with the temperature forecast to reach 40° before 11am and remain at that level well into the evening that is not an option.”

The race meeting at Bunbury on Thursday, 11 February is expected to proceed as scheduled with the maximum temperature forecast to be 35°.

RWWA will transfer the following races programmed for Ascot on Wednesday to other meetings in the proceeding days:

3YO Maiden 1400m (prev. 1500m) Bunbury, Thursday, 11 February
Class 3 Handicap 1000m Bunbury, Thursday, 11 February
3YO NMWLY Handicap 1200m Ascot, Saturday 13 February
Class 5 Handicap 1600m Ascot, Saturday 13 February

Early scratchings have been reinstated for all races and acceptances for the Bunbury meeting will now close at 8am, Tuesday 9 February 2016.
