Strapping four-year-old Dutch Spy burst some bubbles with a convincing victory in the Shine Hair Design Maiden (Race 4-1116m) at Bunbury yesterday.

The Paul Roberts-trained local was taking on boom trial winning debutantes Just A Fluke ($3.20) and Stellar Ignition ($3.90), however, he disposed of his rivals in clinical fashion, justifying being supported in from $4.40 into $3.10 and favourite on TABtouch Fixed Odds.

The son of So Secret, a $7500 purchase at the 2014 Perth Magic Millions yearling sale, wasn’t all that clean away for jockey Glenn Smith, but he quickly slipped into gear and was travelling with a head full of steam when positioned sixth in the middle stages.

Dutch Spy relished the unsustainably-hot tempo set up front by Just A Fluke and Stellar Ignition, and when Smith got him into the open swinging for home, he balanced up and sprinted impressively to cruise to a soft 1-1/4 lengths win (click here to watch replay).

Dutch Spy, who put the writing on the wall with a slashing first-up effort at Bunbury on Melbourne Cup Day (November 1), appears destined for bigger and better things after notching up his maiden triumph in style.
